• Welcome to the Learning Resource Centre

The aim of our Learning Resource Centre (LRC) is to help maximise your potential and enhance your learning experience within a safe, welcoming and vibrant environment conducive to study.

The LRC is a Council for Learning Resources in Colleges (CoLRiC) Grade One ‘Excellent’ Service, a 2015 Association of Colleges (AoC) Beacon Award runner-up, and the recipient of the CoLRiC Jeff Cooper Award 2016 for its ‘First Steps Literacy Project’ which encourages and self-publishes student creative writing work. LRC staff are also KCStar Award Winners and nominees.

We have centres at Huddersfield, Dewsbury, Wheelwright, Brunel, Engineering and Taylor Hill.  We offer a wide range of media equipment and computing facilities, as well as printed books, journals, e-books and electronic resources. Each centre has experienced and knowledgeable staff on hand to support both students and staff.

Explore the sections below to find out more about the resources and services available for you.

        • Access to printed resources including a wide selection of magazines and journals and over 50,000 books.
        • Access to electronic resources including over 5,000 e-books and many relevant databases and information services.  For more information about our electronic resources, please see our e-books and e-resources section.
        • Books and information sources which cover all curriculum areas, as well as leisure interests.  We also have a fiction section, with books for all reading levels and collections of graphic novels, audio books and film DVDs.
        • Flexible study spaces and access to PCs and other media equipment.  For more information about our IT equipment, please see our IT and media equipment section.
        • Study skills, copyright, referencing and plagiarism advice and training.  For more information, please see our study skills section.
        • Assistance with enquiries from our qualified, experienced, knowledgeable and friendly LRC staff, including our subject specialist librarians.  For more information about the LRC staff and our specialisms, please see our meet the team section.

      • E-books and e-resources

        E-books

The LRC provides access to over 5,000 e-books.  We have 4 main e-book platforms: EBSCO, E-book Central, Dawsonera and VLEbooks. E-books are easily accessible 24/7, both inside and outside of college as long as you have an internet connection on your device.

E-books have multiple benefits such as:

        • creating notes
        • highlighting text
        • performing full-text searches
        • navigating easily through chapters
        • copy and paste functionality

Some e-books also have the added functionality of saving information from the last session you were working on i.e. locating highlighted sections and accessing the notes you created previously.

See our User Guide section below for our e-book guides.

        E-resources

The LRC provides access to numerous databases and information services that allow you to search for journal articles, magazine articles, newspaper items, audio-visual collections, and much, much more.

You can access these by going to the LRC online catalogue and logging in using your student/staff ID. Once logged in, your catalogue screen will change colour and you will see lots more options, including more search bars and links to the databases and services.

As well as accessing these through the online catalogue, you can see a full list of all our e-resources using the 'A-Z e-resources' guide in the User Guide section below.

      • PCs and Media Equipment

The LRC provides access to IT, computing and media facilities for all students for free. There is no charge to use or borrow equipment.

PC access is provided in the LRCs at Huddersfield, Dewsbury, Wheelwright, Brunel and Engineering.

        Using a Computer

At all our LRCs, you can just walk up and login to PCs with your normal student login information. Students are limited to 2 hours at a time to promote healthy PC usage.

The LRCs at Huddersfield Centre, Dewsbury Centre and Wheelwright Centre all use a PC booking system called MyPC. With MyPC, you can manage your time in advance and pre-book the PC you want, for the length of time you want (2 hour limit). LRC staff can book this for you, or you can log in to the MyPC website with your normal student login information and book a PC yourself.

        MyPC Logo
Click on the MyPC logo to book or PC time, or visit: https://mypc.kirkleescollege.ac.uk/

The MyPC system lets the user manage their own time more effectively and promotes fair usage of student facilities.

        Printing

Printing in the LRC is extremely easy. Once you've sent your documents to the printer, you can collect it from any printer in the LRC using your student card - your documents won't print until you release them from the printer.
        Prices:
        • A4 Black and White - 4p per side
        • A4 Colour - 20p per side
        • A3 Black and White - 8p per side
        • A3 Colour - 40p per side

You can top up your printing credit at the LRC helpdesks using cash.

Currently, you cannot print directly from your own laptops or devices - you will need to log into a PC and print from there.

        Media equipment loan service

Our LRCs have a range of media equipment for loan to students such as:
        • Laptops, netbooks and tablets
        • Flip and Disgo video cameras
        • Digital cameras
        • Voice recorders
        • Desk top projectors
        • Voting systems

You borrow these using the same account you use to borrow books and other resources - each item counts towards your 15 item limit.*  With the exception of 3-hour loans on all netbooks, our equipment is usually available to borrow for one week at a time on a first-come first-served basis.**

*Items such as laptop and netbooks count as two borrowed items (1 laptop and 1 charger cable).
** Due to high demand, Huddersfield Centre's first-come first-served basis uses a waiting list.
